OF&G applauds Government Organic Action Plan to build a more resilient food system

14th October 2026

OF&G and the organic sector have welcomed the Government’s commitment to organic production to meet increasing consumer demand via a new Organic Action Plan for England, published 14 October.

Developed jointly by Defra and the English Organic Forum, the plan recognises organic systems deliver environmental benefits and sets an ambition to grow the share of English agricultural land farmed organically from around 3.4% today towards 10% by 2036.

The plan prioritises growing domestic organic farming and supply chains to lower reliance on imported organic food. Organic farming helps to reduce the use of inputs like synthetic nitrogen fertilisers and pesticides.

In response to rising consumer demand for organic produce, another focus of the plan supports organic farmers, growers and the wider sector to tackle supply chain barriers, so helping secure markets for British organic food and drink.

OF&G believe this is an important step towards a clear national policy framework for the sector.

Christopher Stopes, Co-chair of the EOF and OF&G Policy Advisor, said: “Many in the organic sector have worked tirelessly to see the OAPE come to fruition – its publication is a huge triumph. In the face of growing pressures from climate volatility, rising costs and supply-chain disruption, organic farming can help strengthen resilience.

“By building fertility in the soil and supporting healthier, more diverse farming systems, organic has long been recognised for its strict standards, full transparency and for contributing to government’s environmental policy objectives. This is a major opportunity for organic farmers and food businesses to bring the plan to life over the coming years.”

OF&G remain committed to engaging with Defra to support future growth in the sector while helping to strengthen environmental resilience and long-term food security.
