Organic farming the answer for Africa
Date Published: 21/11/2008
A UN report suggests that organic farming is likely to be the only sensible way forward for sustainable farming in Africa. The report, embedded below, is a powerful endorsement of taking the long-term view of feeding a nation, rather than the short-term (i.e. one year) approach of GM crops.
In its foreword the report states:
The evidence presented in this study supports the argument that organic agriculture can be more conducive to food security in Africa than most conventional production systems, and that it is
more likely to be sustainable in the long term.
It adds weight to other studies which show that the old, often trotted-out argument that organics can’t meet capacity needs is being shredded, piece by piece!
