NFU Organic Forum – Dairy & Livestock
Date: 22/08/17 Location: Lancashire
Gain a wealth of organic insight within your sector
The NFU Organic Forum is hosting a series of free on-farm events, open to both conventional and organic farmers. These events offer a great opportunity to explore different production systems and gain a better understanding of organics.
Each day includes lunch, a tour of the host farm, access to leading industry speakers as well as panel discussions and Q&A sessions with local MP’s.
Hosted by John Alpe, member of the NFU’s Organic & Hill and Uplands Farming forums. John farms around 1,000 acres near Whitewell, within the Forest of Bowland in Lancashire. This includes around 1,000 breeding ewes, an Angus-cross beef herd and a 40 cow dairy herd. The farm rises from the banks of the River Hoden to around 400 metres up on the moorland with a range of habitat improvement and environmental stewardship schemes in place. John also works closely with the RSPB, is involved in educational and disabled access initiatives, as well as running an ethnic engagement project where he focuses upon developing organic markets.
The agenda will cover:
- Welcome and Introduction – Michael Oakes, NFU Dairy Board Chairman
- NFU Dairy Strategy – Michael Oakes, NFU Dairy Board Chairman
- Environmental Stewardship and Engaging with Local Food Communities – John Alpe, NFU Organics Forum member and host farmer
- Farm Tour
- Organic regulation and organic market – the new UK perspective – Steven Jacobs, OF&G (Organic Farmers and Growers) Business Development Manager
- Q&A session
DEFRA’s Head of Organics will also be in attendance and keen to engage with attendees
