Invitation to a Stakeholder Engagement Workshop

Date: 29 June 2018 Location: GL7 5HF

Dear Organic Producer,

Invitation to a Stakeholder Engagement Workshop on:

  • Wednesday 20th June (2.30pm – 5pm) at Pimhill Farm, Harmer Hill, Shrewsbury,  Shropshire,  SY4 3DY

OR

  • Friday 29th June (2.30pm-5pm) at The Organic Farm Shop, Abbey Home Farm, Burford Road, Cirencester, GL7 5HF.

Reviewing International approaches to Organic regulations and labelling – production, economic and market access implications for UK.

I am writing to you as an organic producer to invite you to participate in a Workshop on possible organic regulation and labelling options post-Brexit. Both farmers and growers are most welcome. We have two dates and locations for the Workshop, Cirencester and Shrewsbury. We would expect around 20 participants at each, so it is first come first served!

With our imminent exit from the EU, Defra has commissioned Organic Research Centre working with Organic Services (based in Germany), EcoS Consultancy and the Swiss Research Institute for Organic Agriculture (FIBL) to review international approaches to organic regulations and labelling. This is an ideal moment to review options for our national organic regulations in England and Wales. The project will provide an evidence base for Defra on future policy options for organic agriculture in the UK as well as exploring the issues surrounding the potential implications of introducing an independent organic labelling system.

These options range from maintaining current EU approaches, to adopting other countries’ regulatory practices. The project will review regulatory approaches controlling organic production, labelling and provisions for trade in other countries and summarise their strengths and opportunities.

In addition, the project is tasked with exploring organic labelling used by other countries such as those in the USA and Norway.

Defra is keen that we seek the views of organic stakeholders, so stakeholder engagement is a key part of the project.

In view of the interest of all organic producers (both farmers and growers) and your commitment to the organic sector, we would like to invite you to participate in a Workshop, either on Wednesday 20th June (2.30pm – 5pm) at Pimhill Farm, Harmer Hill, Shrewsbury,  Shropshire,  SY4 3DY; OR on Friday 29th June (2.30pm-5pm) at The Organic Farm Shop, Abbey Home Farm, Burford Road, Cirencester, GL7 5HF.

Please could you confirm to Christopher Stopes c.stopes@ecosconsultancy.co.uk if you can attend, and if so, which day and location you would find most convenient. The Workshops will be limited to around 20 producers at each event, first come, first served.

Thank you for your active participation in this project.

Best wishes,

Susanne Padel and Christopher Stopes
