Dr David Fleming: 1940-2010

Date Published: 02/12/2010

The sad news has reached us of the death of Dr David Fleming, who has been described as one of the ‘elders of the green movement’.

Dr Fleming died in his sleep on Sunday night. He was a former Chairman of the Soil Association (1985-1990) and had done a lot of work with the Organic Research Centre – Elm Farm. He was also the Director of The Lean Economy Connection, a research centre based in London.

Recently retired Director of ORC, Lawrence Woodward OBE, said of Dr Fleming: “David was one of the most innovative and imaginative thinkers in the environmental movement; his perceptions and analysis was way ahead of others on so many issues. He wrote elegantly and often beautifully. His support for organic farming in general and Organic Research Centre – Elm Farm in particular was resolute. He was a thoroughly nice guy. I was proud to be his friend and grateful for his friendship.”

Organic Farmers & Growers Chief Executive, Richard Jacobs, said: “On the occasions I met David Fleming I was always impressed by how passionate he was, but how he conveyed that passion in a quietly spoken and very friendly way. His passion, commitment and knowledge shone out.  An inspirational chap who is a sad loss.”
