Beckett moves on from Defra

Date Published: 05/05/2006

Margaret Beckett has been given a new role in government as part of a sweeping Cabinet re-shuffle taking place today.

Heavily criticised over the Rural Payments Agency fiasco, Mrs Beckett will now become the Foreign Secretary for the Rest of the World, the job having been split between that post and a minister for Europe role, given to Geoff Hoon.

The new Secretary of State for Environment, Food and Rural Affairs had not been named at the time of writing.
