Avian flu zones to be lifted

Protection and surveillance zones put in place following the Suffolk bird flu outbreak are to be lifted, Defra has announced.
Assuming there are no new cases in the meantime, the first protection zone will be removed on Saturday, December 8, with the second lifted two days later, on the 10th.
Restrictions imposed on the movement and gathering of birds will remain in place for the time being, although the wider protection and surveillance zones enforced in November are due to be lifted by December 19.
The measures were put in place following the identification of the H5N1 strain of the virus at Redgrave Park Farm, on the Norfolk/Suffolk border in the second week of November.
