Avian flu restricted zone lifted in Norfolk

Date Published: 01/06/2006

Defra has formally removed the restricted zones around three farms in Norfolk where a strain of avian influenza was discovered in April.

The low pathogenic H7N3 strain of the virus was detected on the farms and two protective zones were imposed to halt the spread of the disease.

After the passing of 21 days since the completion of thorough cleansing and disinfection, Defra has announced that no further positive test results have occured on the sites.

All necessary surveillance and tracing had been carried out prior to the latest move.

The restrictions were lifted at 10am on May 26 and no other cases of the avian flu have been reported in the UK since this outbreak was discovered.
